Speaking in response to the Foreign Secretary’s statement on Syria and Iran, Brooks Newmark welcomes new dialogue with Iran which can play an important role in bringing peace to Syria. He calls on the Foreign Secretary to ensure that UN evidence of crimes against humanity will be used to bring Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher to justice.
Brooks Newmark leads a debate on the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) and calls for the UK to take a lead in persuading other countries to support granting the organisation a permanent legal status so that it can continue its valuable work on locating and identifying persons missing as a result of armed conflicts.
Speaking during a debate on Syria and EU sanctions, Brooks Newmark calls on the Foreign Secretary to make use of the forthcoming UK presidency of the UN Security Council and election in Iran to embark on a strategy of radical diplomatic engagement with all parties and also lift the arms embargo and threaten support for the Free Syria army.
Following the Foreign Secretary’s statement to the Commons on the conflict in Syria, Brooks Newmark asks if the forthcoming elections in Iran may present an opportunity for us to “press the reset button” in our relations with Iran.
