Brooks is an academic with a long-standing interest in education policy, international development, Syria and the Middle East.

Brooks uses his experience and expertise in these areas to support international development and humanitarian projects. He is currently studying for a DPhil at the University of Oxford’s Education Department, while also writing a book on Bashar Assad.

Academia

Brooks is currently Studying for a DPhil at the University of Oxford’s Education Department, focussing on Education Reform in Rwanda.

Brook’s Masters dissertation focused on Fine Motor Proficiency in Seven Year Old Children in Rwanda as a predictor of academic achievement. His doctorate is focusing on seeking to explore the drivers of education policy in Rwanda through the lens of politicians with a view to better understanding the formal and informal influences on policymaking.

He is also a recognised expert on security affairs and the Middle East and is writing a book on Bashar Assad.

Brooks is on the Panel of Experts for the International Commission of Missing Persons (ICMP) - an organisation dedicated to locating people missing as a result of wars or disasters. Following his departure from politics in 2015, Brooks was invited by the University of Oxford’s Centre for International Relations to conduct an academic study into the ICMP after he spoke in Parliament to persuade the Government and other countries to grant ICMP with permanent legal status so the organisation did not have to shut down.

Brooks holds several degrees from the world’s most prestigious intuitions. He was educated at the University of Oxford where he received an MSc in Education and Harvard University where he received a BA in History at Harvard College. He was also awarded an MBA in Finance from Harvard Business School.

International Relations & Development

Brooks is actively involved in international relations and development.

During his political career, Brooks was the Senior Government Whip with responsibility for the department of International Development. He spoke out regularly in parliament about humanitarian crises in Syria and the Middle East and between 2006-2011 he was engaged in conflict resolution with the Syrian president Bashar-al-Assad, Hezzbollah and Hamas.

In 2014, Brooks Newmark was part of a group of 50 European politicians who spent three days at a camp on the Turkish side of the Syrian border to understand the challenges faced by Syrian refugees and what more the UK Government could do.In addition, he was involved in several international development trips to support local populations in rural communities and education projects in Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, the Central African Republic and Rwanda.

In post-conflict Rwanda, after spending almost a decade doing voluntary work, he set up A Partner in Education, which provides inclusive and quality education for Rwandan children. He is actively involved the charity today.
